Dog Owners With Mutts: Have You Ever Given Your Dog A “designer” Name?

We had a collie cross spaniel and that is what we called her… a collie cross.
Have any of you ever given your dogs designer names? Or do you just say what it is properly without calling it a pomchi or whatever?

  1. The Hoochmeister™ says:

LOL what would a back yard breeder call a a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, a Border Collie and a Boxer?
    A cardboard box!

  2. Brooklyn says:

haha. Yea i gave mine a weird name too. he was a mix of a malteese and a poodle and a westy so he is our little Highland Maltee

  3. luvjere says:

I’ve had mixed dogs before, (mixed with two purebreds) and never called them by a “designer name.” However, I think people should be able to call their dog whatever they want. BUT in doing so, you risk being picked on. So, I really don’t care if someone wants to name their dog something ridiculous. :)

  4. Nah, when people ask what breed he is, I usually say a Border Collie mix.

  5. Leigh says:

I can’t even understand how a grown adult can use words like goldendoodle, pomchi, cockatzu, puggle, without being embarrassed. It sounds ridiculous, so no, I have always called my dogs by their mix (If known), and I refuse to call anyone else’s dogs by those ridiculous names, as well. Your Poodle mix is fine with me, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to embarrass myself with your cutesy doodle name for it, or legitimize your mixing two of my favorite breeds into that monstrosity.

  6. LOL I figured out my beagle/basset was a beasset, or assegle hound just as a joke. His true breed is kleptomaniac

  7. rosemary says:

I had a dog who had a bunch of breeds in him, most obviously beagle and border collie. I once joked that if someone decided he was a designer dog, they’d call him a borgle. My sister thought that was a really stupid name. I didn’t blame her; most “designer dog” names are stupid anyway. XD

  8. No, I haven’t I wouldnt want to seem like a “designer” dog breeder, which I am not
but just for fun I call my Rhodesian Ridgeback/Whippet mix a Rhowipp or Rodewhipp

  9. Susie Derkins says:

No I don’t give designer names, my sisters dog is a chocolate Lab mix, we aren’t sure of the mix cept we think it’s Pitbull, when people ask I say she’s a chocolate lab mix, not a labrapit, or a pitador. I also fostered a Yorkie Dachshund mix as a joke we called her a Dorkie but if people asked I would say she’s a yorkie/dachshund mix.

  10. KidsNCat says:

When people ask what my new puppy is, I say a “Heinz 57″ :) She’s actually Border Collie, Blue Heeler, Australian Shepherd, Black Lab, and Great Dane. What a mix, huh? :D What’s kinda impressive is the family we got her from knew her ‘pedigree’ (so-to-speak) better than a lot of “reputable breeders”.
Although one day we were being silly trying to figure out what “cool” *note sarcasm* name we could give her… Black and Blue Australian Bordador? Hehe. It was like playing Mad Libs or Cryptograms. Even though she’s only a little over 8 weeks, she looks at this point like a red Australian Shepherd. She’s got the naturally short tail, white toe tips, and dark spectacles. People that see her want one just like her…and that’s what I love about mutts…they’re one of a kind! :)
    @Hooch: If I could give you a double-thumbs-up I would!! :D

  11. I love Timmy my Springer Spaniel says:

We have a English cross Welsh Springer Spaniel…We just call him a Springer Spaniel…

  12. Wicked Wanda says:

I just call her my little mutt. If people ask then I will tell them what she’s crossed with but usually she’s just my little mutt.

  13. Rayven ~ Here we Go Again says:

    Does pound puppy count?
When I had my mutt there only “designer” out there were cockapoos.

  14. Bizket says:

Yes. My dog and my cousin’s dog are German Chuskies! They’re brother and sister from different litters, but with the same parents. They’re Chow Husky And G/S. They’re very sweet loving dogs

  15. Jasmer says:

No, I always just called them a mix. The exception is my “alaskan husky”, because it is a colloquially recognized term for a very specific working type mongrel sled dog. There are all kinds of husky mixes, that doesn’t make them a performance sled dog like the “alaskan” husky, which are selectively bred and not just carelessly mixed. There’s just no standard.
I don’t care if somebody wants to give their mixed breed dog a funny little designer name. In fact, it wasn’t really a big deal until “designer” mongrels became fashionable. Until then, it was just for shits and giggles. Nowadays as long as the owner knows and realizes they own a mongrel dog and not any actual legitimate breed, I don’t care what they call it.

  16. firenze says:

As a child my family adopted a Labrador/Poodle cross from the shelter before “labradoodles” were the rage. We called her our Lovely Mongrel Mutt.

  17. * Jamie * says:

We call our little mutt the “Beverly Hill Billy Chihuahua.” I have no idea if she has chihuahua in her but sometimes her little eyes squint and it looks like she does. :)

  18. Mutter says:

Hmmmm excuzz meh, butt my dawgz are purebread hybreds! Not muttz! ;-)
    LOL just kidding.
Yes, I call my two mutts what they are: mutts. Heinz 57 mutts. We have no idea what they are mixed with, BTW.http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4010/4663…
    lmao @ Hooch

  19. Tasha says:

I’m not goign to lie… I’m guilty to say that yes, once, about 2 years ago I called him a “Hava-Tzu”. LOL. I thought he was mixed with Havanese and Shih Tzu (I still think he is), and I used to call him that once I found out about that name… Now, though, whenever somebody asks what breed is he I say “He’s a mutt. I’m thinking he’s mixed with Havanese x Shih Tzu, though I’m still not sure” since I really am not sure what he’s mixed with, but I do know it’s with Shih Tzu.

  20. Mostly I’m with Chaos, because Apollo is 3/4 Border collie, 1/4 Australian shepherd, so he is just a Border collie mix… What would I call him anyway??? A Border shepherd? An Australian collie? An Auster Sheppie? I LIKE IT! Or… a .. Bordalian Colherd… I like Auster Sheppie better.
    I used to have a Siberian Husky/black lab mix…
a Sibador Huskiever. Laberian Retrievy? Can it be a Sibador Retrievy, because I like that.
I can’t come up with one for my old Border collie/Lab mix… they already have a name.. Bordador…
But yeah… (I can kind of see why they come up with those retarded names… it’s kinda fun! It’s amusing when people come up with them jokingly, it’s annoying as heck when people seriously think they have a Sibador Retrievy.)

  21. Bells : says:

His Y/A DS name is German Chowerd
    kidding…
No I either say MUTT, when people ask…or a GSD mix
at home we call him muttley…i luv it

  22. Akita inu in you says:

i had a rottX mastiff and i called him what he was =]
    grade A american mutt.
    R.I.P:
died three years ago of genetic heart defect that was never found until to late.

  23. ĴĔŃŃŶ ■■■■■ says:

For anyone wanting to name their mutt, here is a huge list!http://www.achclub.com/modules.php?name=…
I thought it was a joke until i read the statement at the end….
    And some others:
    Pointer + Setter =
    Poinsetter, a traditional Christmas pet
Kerry Blue Terrier + Skye Terrier =
Blue Skye, a dog for visionaries
    Pekingnese + Lhasa Apso =
    Peekasso, an abstract dog
Irish Water Spaniel + English Springer Spaniel =
Irish Springer, a dog fresh and clean as a whistle
Labrador Retriever + Curly Coated Retriever =
Lab Coat Retriever, the choice of research scientists
    Newfoundland + Basset Hound =
Newfound Asset Hound, a dog for financial advisors
    Terrier + Bulldog =
Terribull, a dog prone to awful mistakes
    Bloodhound + Labrador =
Blabador, a dog that barks incessantly
    Malamute + Pointer =
Moot Point, owned by….oh, well, it doesn’t matter anyway
    Collie + Malamute =
Commute, a dog that travels to work
    Deerhound + Terrier =
Derriere, a dog that’s true to the endhttp://www.clevelandseniors.com/family/d…
I have never given my dog a designer name, he is a BC/Whippet so the closest ‘breed’ name would be a lucher, but it is more a type of dog.

  24. WyrDachs says:

No. When people asked what “breed” she was, I always said a Beagle mix. Sometimes, I’d say Beagle/Lab mix. I never called it any silly name. When I entered her in obedience or agility competitions, she was listed as an “All-American” or AMBOR (which stands for American Mix Breed Obedience Registry).

  25. Unpredictable *Raw Food Cultist* says:

No. I call Sasha a German Shepherd/Siberian Husky mix. I call Chopper a mutt or a Spaniel mutt. For fun, I was trying to think up a ridiculous designer name for Sasha’s mix, and came up with Germerian Shepsky LMAO

  26. K says:

Nope, I always call her a mutt. People have trouble accepting that.
Our best guess is that she’s a Rat Terrier/Schnauzer mix. Which, according to a website, is a Schnerrier. Ridiculous. lol
Because she’s small, I usually tell people she’s a giant breed mix (Dane, St. Bernard, etc.) just to see the looks on their faces lol

  27. Emilie says:

I call my Aussie a camel and orangutan.. does that count? :)

  28. Ava Girl * has purebred vigor says:

The dog I owned previously was a mix & I never called her anything different. If someone asked for specifics I’d say that the shelter guessed GSD mixed with Dobermann.

  29. Chuckles ~Close call~ says:

If people ask what kind dogs Chuckles and Sampson are, I just say what they are.. Lab/German Shepherd mix and Lab/Chow mix. And their Muttsie Designer Dog name is… Germab and LaChow. :P
Edit – I love how people have the time to TD 30 answers… not.

  30. I have called my dog a “North American Shepherd” when people ask me what she is just for my own amusement. People will nod and say something stupid like “Oooooh, so THAT’s what they look like” because they don’t want to look stupid by asking WTF breed that is.
After thinking about it I decided I better stop doing that b/c the next thing I know people will go looking for a “North American Shepherd” (an alternate name used for “Mini Aussies”) because they see my mutt and think she’s cute. Also, people assume that just because they see that my dog is well behaved that the “breed” must be very well behaved and in turn even more desirable.

  31. Herbie & Fern-Hoochie says:

Herbie is hmm Collie x Whippet x Staffy x GDS, so that makes him a German Whip Stollie!
    Ah cool
No.. I call him a Staffy mix. But most of the time a mongrel or Heinz 57.
My mums friend always calls him a Bitzer Hound- I think that’s kinda cool.
My mum says he’s a Dingo Dog, either that or a Bangladeshi Street Doghttp://philip.greenspun.com/images/20010…
