Puppies Kidnapped ???

A week ago my dog had her puppies while out in the yard by her dog house. We mistakenly thought that she was not due for another week or so. She was chained out on her lead when it happened. Anyhow, all of her puppies were out of her reach!! They were in holes dug in the yard, under leaves, in ditches and brush piles, etc. We searched quickly and found all eight puppies (Thank God!!).
Herein lies the question… what happened? Clearly she did not put them there, nor did they move there on their own. They were only minutes/hours old. Someone told me that the father dog sometimes comes and burries the pups to keep them warm until mom can tend to them. Is this true? None were harmed. We are very curious! (All 8 are healthy now and mom and pups are in their bed area up by us now…)

No Dog should be on a chain, shame on you!
In California it is against the law to chain a dog for more than 2 hours.
No , father dogs do not do this, if it was her first litter, she may have been scared and kept moving as she delivered them.
Take good care of her and her pups and no more chains.

  2. That’s very strange. It doesn’t seem logical though but if the sire lives close by then it could be possible because some species of animals work together in parenting not just the unlucky female.

We use to raise dogs. I have never heard of a father dog burying the pups to keep them warm. It sounds more like they may have wiggled their way around.

The more important questions are why is your dog left on a chain for long periods of time, and why isn’t she spayed?

It may have been the Father puppy that did this if he was near by

Male and female dogs do not mate for life, and male dogs do not participate in the raising and nurturing of the puppies. Some possibilities of what happened are:
    1. If your dog had her puppies inside of her dog house it is possible that the chain she was tied to drug and scattered the puppies about.
    2. It is quite possible that she did not have her puppies in the dog house and just let them fall to the ground. Even though they are very young, puppies can still crawl and drag themselves around looking for warmth and food.
    3. If the male dog was in the yard with the puppies, it is possible that he picked them up and carried them around out of curiosity and play. Usually though, when this happens, the puppies are inadvertently injured and sometimes they die.

They were on vacation, birth is exhausting for all concerned. You should have left them alone. Now they can’t get a refund for the return trip, and may have to pay penalties.
    Father Puppy….LoL to funny
Hurricane wind I guess there Katrina

What a bizarre story but I glad to hear everyone is OK. I’ve never heard of the male dog doing that but anything is possible. I agree with the previous answer, I think it is more likely that they wiggled their way to cover. It might be a natural instinct left over from when dogs lived in the wild.

Is she outside all the time? Dogs should not be left outside. Much less and a dog that is not spayed. That is why we have all those unwanted dogs in the shelters! (cats too)Why would you get a dog to just leave her out there? How would you feel if your parents tied you to a tree outside and left you there?
