What Is Your Opinion On Someone Else’s Dog Relieving Itself On Your Sodded Lawn?

We’re fairly new to the neighborhood and have noticed some things that we find rude.
One family lets their dog free roam the neighborhood (we’re a one street neighborhood in the country) and it goes in every body’s yard. I walked out my front door to see a BIG ol’ pile right there on our sodded grass. Not to mention that I think it’s rude and unsafe because:
1. Not everyone likes dogs.
2. What if someone else’s dogs doesn’t like strange dogs.
3. What if someone who doesn’t know it decides to kill it?
4. What if a stray gets it?
5. I in particular don’t like strange dog’s pooing in our yard!
Then I also noticed that another couple in the neighborhood walks their dog and will let it poo in our yard! Granted they pick it up, I still think it’s rude! We’re not a park!
(We have 3 dogs ourselves whom we let out in our backyard to do their business and would never let them go in a neighbor’s yard!)
What would you do in our situation?
What would you do?

  1. First you should check the laws in your area to see if dogs are required to be leashed.
Then I would have a chat with the offending neighbors and let them know how you feel. Be nice, explain your point of view and see what they say. You don’t want to create enemies with your neighbors. Talk to other neighbors and see how they feel.
Personally I don’t care if an owner let’s their dog poop of the edge of my yard as long as they take it with them.

There is nothing wrong with a stranger’s dog using your yard for a toilet as long as they clean it up. Just be thankful if they are cleaning it up. Also, most laws only require it to be picked up, not prevented.

Good idea Bindi. Actually I’d pick it up and deposit it in the offending neighbor’s yard.

I don’t mind if someone’s dog poos in the yard as long as they pick it up. But most people here don’t, and poo patrol in my yard for other people’s dogs is getting old. Mine go in the backyard, not the front yard.
I’m making a sign for my front law that says “I don’t expect you to pick up after my dogs, don’t expect me to pick up after yours. Your dog poops, you scoop.”
It illegal here to let your pet use public property or other people’s personal property, with the exception that its not against the law if you promplty clean up.
However most people either don’t know this, or don’t care. The leash law isn’t enforced, so trying to get that one enforced is a lost cause.

I actually did what Bonnie said. I have a neighbor that let’s his dog do the same. I just email animal control and they take care of it. Needless to say the neighbor doesn’t talk to me anymore. Another neighbor blamed my dog for going in her yard so we cleaned it 2 times. The 3rd time I refused to clean it because I know for a fact it wasn’t her because we had to tie her for a bit until we fixed our fence. Now she doesn’t talk to us either. O’well that’s ok with me, cause now she doesn’t borrow money from me anymore.lol
